Advent Week 1

Advent Week 1

Advent Week 1

Mary’s Song – Luke 1:46-56

Advent means “arrival” or “coming.” During Advent, we celebrate the first coming of the Savior and we look forward to the future coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Throughout history, Advent has often been a time of preparation. Our prayer is these devotions help prepare you well to celebrate Christ this Christmas!

What is your favorite Christmas carol?

In Luke 1:46-56, we are given an amazing “hymn of praise” about God’s greatness. Discuss together: How have you, as a family, seen God’s greatness this past year?

Now, imagine Mary—a young, humble, ordinary woman in a small town—suddenly visited by an angel with life-altering news. Not only will you bear a child, but this child will be the Savior of the world. The weight of such a calling is unimaginable.

The fear, questions, and uncertainty would be overwhelming. Mary’s world was about to change drastically. She faced potential rejection, misunderstanding, and even danger as an unwed mother in her culture. Yet, she chose to trust God fully. Her song reveals not fear but faith, not despair but joy.

Her response is one of the most profound expressions of faith and praise in the Bible. Despite all the possible outcomes of her pregnancy news, her focus shifts from her circumstances to God’s greatness. What faith!

What was the cause of Mary’s great faith? She knew the Word! The words of her “hymn of praise” are saturated with Scripture, showing her deep knowledge of God’s promises. Discuss together: How are great faith and God’s Word connected? What goals can you set as a family to pursue God’s Word more in 2025? (More people with more of God’s Word)

A prayer for this week

Lord, help us to trust You as Mary did, to see Your hand in both the ordinary and extraordinary moments of our lives. Fill our hearts with wonder at Your faithfulness and remind us to glorify You, even when the road ahead feels uncertain.

Day 2: Luke 1:19-33
Day 3: Luke 1:34-56 (see Hannah’s song in 1 Samuel 2:1-10)

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.”
–Luke 1:46-47
